Grandma Fights Off Carjacker With A Cup of Coffee

August 31st, 2008

With all the fuss over the medical benefits and problems of drinking your morning cup o’ joe, I doubt the researchers ever considered this *important* health benefit…

In Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, a would-be carjacker attacked Sandy Bruderer, a 60-year-old grandmother, who was stopped at a red light. Rather than give up the car, she defended herself by scalding his face with her cup of coffee. As she reached for her second cup of coffee, the carjacker decided he’d had enough and ran. Bruderer suffered with only a minor cut to her thumb. How’s that for a gourmet coffee gift? =)

Starbucks Promoting Child Education Using Gourmet Coffee Gifts

August 24th, 2008

I thought that this was a cool story worth sharing with everybody. There is a lot of controversy about Starbucks, and no-doubt, MANY people give gift cards or Starbucks coffee as their gourmet coffee gift of choice. But set aside those emotions for one minute as you read this story.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of the brand and am not too impressed with their freshly-burnt coffee, but there are some great things that they do. In this case, a Starbucks in North Syracuse, New York, partnered with an after-school child care program to host a activity day to bring their families together. The kids had books read to them by their families and learned to plant flowers in coffee grounds. The parents got quality time with their kids and free coffee.

It’s nice to see a huge corporation (or at least the local arm of a huge corporation) taking some time off to help the community.  And it’s wonderful that they use the gift of gourmet coffee to do it!

What Makes Coffee So Special?

August 16th, 2008

Coffee…  For some people, they think of warm, black, bitter water.  For others, such as myself, I think of spending time with family, relaxing mornings and deep conversations.  Coffee really isn’t about the coffee itself, it’s about friends.  It’s about hopes and dreams.  It’s about life.  Hopefully you don’t think that I’m going over-the-top here, but I think other coffee lovers out there can appreciate and understand when I say that coffee is much deeper than just a caffeine buzz.

With that in mind, I would like to kick this blog off with a question…  What makes coffee so special?  How does this small bean do such big things?  I think about coffee, and I think about first dates, reunions with friends, talking with my wife before work, cold Christmas mornings, and fascinating trips to Europe, Hawaii and Jamaica.  Chances are that you may have similar memories, each vivid, emotional and deeply personal.

I was thinking about this the other day, and it make me realize something about my favorite gourmet coffee gift that I have given.  It was a simple pound of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee that I bought during a trip to Jamaica.  The gift was not about the coffee (which was fantastic, by the way), but was a reminder of the time that my girlfriend and I had spent together.  Every morning, she and I have our morning coffee, and those same emotions flood into my mind inexplicably.

If one simple gift can mean so much, maybe there is some hidden magic to that humble coffee bean.  That started me on my search for the perfect gourmet coffee gift.  So, I started this blog to get your help in finding that perfect gift.  Maybe we’ll even learn something more about the mystery of coffee while we’re at it.  Whether it be the best coffee and espresso machine or the finest burr coffee grinders, the search for the ultimate gift is on.

Wishing you always a warm mug,
-Kris

P.S.  Please feel free to comment to this, or any other post on this blog.  I’d love to hear your thoughts!
